Indian Canyons in Palm Springs, California

Once a month I drive from Los Angeles to the desert oasis of Palm Springs. It’s a work trip but I try to dedicate a day just for fun. Among the many outdoor activities I’ve enjoyed are the Aerial Tramway; a rotating tramcar that takes you 8,516 feet up the sheer cliffs of Chino Canyon, and visiting the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens; a 1,200 acre wildlife and botanical park.

This past spring I experienced the undisturbed natural beauty of hiking through the Indian Canyons located on Agua Caliente tribal land. I was surprised to learn that the canyons are easy to access and located just minutes from downtown Palm Springs.

Centuries ago, the Agua Caliente Cahuilla Indians called this area home. Wildlife and vegetation found throughout the area ensured stable living conditions. Most of the trails follow running streams and are abundant in California Fan Palms. You can hike over desert hillsides or along cool, palm-lined gorges. Be sure to take a moment to breathe in the quiet serenity or dip your toes in the cool stream, its nature at its best.

This beautiful landscape of waterfalls, plant life and rock formations combine to create an exceptional and tranquil setting for photographers and video enthusiasts. I thoroughly enjoyed weaving my way along the trails trying to capture the spirit and charm of this peaceful terrain that is revered as sacred by the Indians.
