Local Travel: Take a Day Trip

Looking to squeeze in one last vacation before fall arrives and the kids (or you) go back to school? Why not do a road trip? Even a day trip in the car can feel like a vacation – just pack a few sandwiches and drinks in a cooler, and pump up the music, and before you know it, you’re in a whole new place – or an old favorite, if you prefer. Best of all, it costs little more than filling up the gas tank. (Use an online gas calculator to estimate your fuel costs for the trip.)

Here are some ideas for a day trip and tips to keep everyone
happy.

Before You Leave

  • Check the forecast. Before you leave, be sure to
check with the Weather Channel to make sure no rain or other inclement weather is forecast.
  • Map it out. Look at a map of your local area – are
there towns nearby that you’ve never visited? Or perhaps a lake or river you’ve always wanted to go to? Map out the least direct way to make the trip even more of an adventure. Look at Roadside America for ideas of offbeat attractions.

During the Journey

  • Go wild. If you haven’t been to your local zoo in a while, now’s the time. Many zoos are boasting new animal attractions, such as the two new baby elephants at the Pittsburgh Zoo or the three 3-month-old Malayan tiger cubs at the San Diego Zoo.
  • Take in a movie. More than 500 drive-in theaters are still in operation in the U.S. Visit the site Drive In Theaters for one near you and enjoy a movie in the moonlight.
  • Get back to nature. Visit local state parks or recreation areas for some low-tech fun.
  • Enjoy the drive. Whether you’re in the driver’s seat or a passenger, remember to sit back and just enjoy the journey. Pack away a few favorite CDs to listen to in the car or program your iPod or MP3 player with some good road songs. If you’re traveling with kids, try using Mom’s Minivan for fun games and activities to keep the kids occupied.
