Tucked behind the freeway between Mission Bay and Balboa Park in the heart of San Diego, sits the lively neighborhood of Old Town. The first settlement in California, Old Town is a place devoted to maintaining an ancient way of life. A place where people in colorful dresses and suits mingle amongst the tank tops and flip flops of the modern world.
On one of San Diego's many glorious sun-filled days, one of the best ways to experience its beauty is to follow the lead of the locals and get out onto the water. If you don't own your own nautical vessel, not to worry, a two-hour Hornblower Harbor Cruise is a great option to enjoy the water and soak up some sun. Bring your sunglasses, a camera, binoculars and a windbreaker and head out for a day on the bay.
If you want a firsthand experience of San Diego's legendary laidback lifestyle, Mission Beach can't be beat. Cruise down the infamous Mission Boulevard until the road suddenly dead ends at the brink of the bay. Make sure to get there at sunrise to secure a parking spot in the always cramped lots. Don't forget your walking shoes as you begin your day with a brisk stroll down this two-block wide, two-mile strip overflowing with pure white sandcastles and the most desirable real estate on the Southern California coastline.
There's something a little bit different about San Diego's Pacific Beach neighborhood. Besides the half-clothed twenty-somethings walking down Garnet Street and Grand Street or the 45-minute line out the door on Thursday evenings at Moondoggies, there's a little thing we lovingly call Sunday Funday that makes this area ultra special.
